Your choice of Civil Marriage Celebrant is a significant decision when planning your wedding. Your chosen celebrant will work closely with you to create the words and ceremony that will launch you onto the next part of your journey together.
Thus choosing the "right" celebrant is very important. The right celebrant will work well with you and your ceremony will be "your way". Your celebrant will perform large amounts of unseen work prior to the wedding day. On the day it will all seem to fly past just remember, that your celebrant is vital to ensure that you are legally married.
Please remember that only Civil Marriage Celebrants (registered with the Federal Attorney General) can perform legal marriage ceremonies.
The big question...... How do you choose the "right" celebrant for your individual style and expectations.
- Firstly, take a moment to visualise your ceremony. Take note of the decorations, theme, the fine details and venue. These choices capture your style - you need a celebrant to understand that style and work with you.
- Search for your celebrant on NeedaCelebrant by entering a post code or selecting a region. Using the keyword search feature with a region is also a great way of catering for special requests.
- Once you have a list of celebrants on the screen read the short listing. It pays to view the celebrant's full page. Here you will find more photos and greater detail regarding their services. The testimonials are always good to read. If the celebrant has displayed their contact phone number it is a great idea to give them a call to check on their availability and you have the added bonus of hearing their voice.
- Contact one celebrant at a time to prevent confusion. The temptation when you see so many celebrants is to contact a few. I suggest you pick one, contact them and spend some time talking about your plans. You may find your "right" celebrant is the first celebrant you contact. If not, you would have learnt a little and will be better prepared when you contact the next celebrant.
Things to consider when choosing your celebrant:
- Does the celebrant offer an obligation free first meeting or is happy to chat over the phone?
- Will the celebrant incorporate your ideas and wishes into your ceremony?
- Do they allow you plenty of choice with your ceremony?
- Has the celebrant advised you of the legal requirements for a marriage?
- Will they perform a rehearsal and do they charge extra for this?
- Will the celebrant liaise with the entertainers, photographers, wedding planner and other service providers?
- If you are planning on including children in the ceremony ask the celebrant if they are open to this.
- If the number of guest or venue require does the celebrant provide a PA system so that all your guests are able to hear the ceremony?
- On your planned day how many bookings will the celebrant have?
- What would happen if your ceremony ran over time or started late?
- Does the celebrant have a clear pleasant voice?
- After meeting the celebrant did you think they were confident?
- Will you feel comfortable working with the celebrant in preparing the content of your ceremony?
- After talking to the celebrant do you feel that they are contactable and easy to talk to?
Celebrants' Fees
Few of us have the privilege of organising a wedding with an unlimited budget so we must pay attention to "how much".
Often the first question couples ask a celebrant is, what do you charge? Please don't let the dollar amount be the only deciding factor when choosing your celebrant. Different fees often apply for different levels of service so spend some time talking with the celebrant about the ceremony you have planned. Once the celebrant has an understanding of: the venue, number of guests, rehearsal requirements, travel distances, parking issues and document or immigration issues, most will be able to give you a firm quote. Celebrants' fees vary greatly depending upon the region in Australia, the level of service and the celebrant's reputation.
For a little extra help with choosing a celebrant please have a read of the FAQ's. You may find some very useful information.
